Squirrel Proofing?

I have squirrels that keep chewing holes in my roof trim and residing in my attic/walls. I have patched these holes with spray foam and steel wool and neither work. They are climbing up my rear fire escape so I just cannot remove it. Its to the point now that I have to replace the trim. What can I use that is 100% Squirrel proof?Squirrel Proofing?
Aside from a 9MM, I would say chicken wire, the fine wire mesh that is used for building chicken coups. I know squirrels dont like metal, so maybe that would work, staple it up.Squirrel Proofing?

You really need to catch them. Best way is to get a large net, and then lure them toward you by showing them your nuts.

Call your local county extension office - they may have some suggestions for you.

We had a similar problem a couple of years ago... we covered over the openings in our soffit with some very strong wire mesh. We left the edges rough and sticking out as well. Not very attractive - but it did the job!

We put the mesh up in the middle of the day so that the squirrels would be gone foraging. Squirrels have a very fast metabolism and would not live long if trapped in your attic - but the smell would be horrendous! (Not to mention the flies, etc.) Sadly - I know from experience!

I will admit, also, that I poisoned the little rodents as well. The day before closing up the hole, we put some rat poison pellets in some peanut butter on plastic spoons and tossed them up into the opening. The poison didn't activate in their bodies until they drank water the next day - so they didn't die in my attic.

I know that there is a smelly, gooey substance you can place in areas where you don't want birds nesting. We used it at some of the apartment communities I managed. Perhaps there is something similar for squirrels.
but a pellet gun and shoot the little suckers
Get a B-B gun and take the little monsters out!!!
Repair your, holes and put hair in a old sock and hang it near the entrace the little buggers use this will get ride of the nut eaters also racoons and any other little critters that want to share you home. try getting rid of squirls on any search engine
A B. F. C. Or you could just get a cat and let it loose. Chlorine works but smells, lemon or lime juice works until it`s washed away. A plastic owl has been known to keep the beggars away also. Good luck. Took me 3 months to get gid of all the racoon family. Couldn`t access all the attic. Now I have 2 new skylights. Another thing is cat or dog hair tied around the area to fool them into thinking there are other animals in the area. They also do not like hand soap, except ivory.

    I need my house squirrel-proofed?

For the last two weeks, I've suspect there was a mouse in my unfinished, attic-like upstairs... today I saw it was actually a squirrel. I watched it eat the mouse poison I'd set out for the mouse, and then (presumably) leave the attic; apparently, it knows how to get in and out. What should I do? Is there an expert that can squirrel proof my house?

I don't need the squirrel captured, since it's entering and exiting; I need the house secured so it can't get in.I need my house squirrel-proofed?
Best thing to do is find the entrance hole...usually in the soffits... and block it off or put some sticky glue like some mouse traps have around the hole.

Hardware stores sell it in caulking tubes...squirrels and other rodents hate it because it sticks to their fur and they can't clean it off...they'll avoid the hole in the future.I need my house squirrel-proofed?

Where can I find a 100% guaranteed squirrel-proof bird feeder?

It must not have any plastic, plexiglass or wooden parts that can be reached by squirrel teeth.

Also, it must not have a locking mechanism that the squirrels can figure out and open.

Finally, those plexiglass baffles do not really work as eventually the more gymnastically gifted squirrels will learn how to stretch and flip into the seed trays.Where can I find a 100% guaranteed squirrel-proof bird feeder?

no current bird feeder is 100% guaranteed to be squirrel proof as these guys are agile and mobile enough to get to the food. try to out think them, if you put out to much food you will get spillage and attract other animals like rats and skunks into your yard, i have found that if you offer them some thing easier to get they will take it, buy peanuts in shells string them in long amounts hang them on trees also hanging apples away from feeders can help
to be Honest - it has not been invented yet - I seen a show where they tried all kinds of things and the hardest one only took them under a week to figure out - I just gave up and got one of them corn feeders that spin around and they became so occupied with that, that they didn't seem to want the seeds so much - just put them as far away from each other as you can - out of sight out of mind
None! The squirrels are smart and they will figure it out. I would hang it feeder 2 ft. from the tree branch you are going to hang it from using fishing string, and make sure it is away from other branches. It works better than the ';proofed'; ones.
They are rascally little fellas! We used to have one that would clean out the feeder and then take a nap in it! I'll give you a star and maybe some innovative person will answer.
Many say they are squirrel proof but I have never found one that actually was. The little guys are agile %26amp; smart! LOL! I just put out enough to feed both squirrels %26amp; birds in multiple sites.

    Squirrel proof bird feeder?

6 months ago, i bought a bird feeder. it was called the ';yankee tipper';. i'm close to a spruce tree. and squirrels live with the birds in the tree. the squirrels jump off the tree and eat upside down. and then the crows fly at the same time while they eat. then, i bought a dome-like thing for the squirrels. but they still eat upside down. now, the squirrels scared off the small birds that i enjoy. i live in the Kansas City-Prairie village area, so i was wondering if there is any good feeders around here. i don't want to buy on the internet, please.Squirrel proof bird feeder?
My mom buys some birdseed that has some sort of pepper in it, which the birds still enjoy, but the squirrels HATE it. if you sprinkle it around the bird feeder too, they'll eat a piece and then never go back once they taste it.

I think it's called ';squirrel off'; or something. and it's totally humane.Squirrel proof bird feeder?
One thing you can do is to move your feeder further away from the tree with all the squirrels in it. Move it at least 10 feet away from the tree or anywhere a squirrel can jump from in your yard. Another thing you can do is to place some cayenne pepper in the bird feeder. It won't hurt the birds, but squirrels hate it.
The key is to put it where the squirrels can not jump to it. And thats not really an easy thing to do.
Honestly, I have yet to see any truly squirrel proof feeder.

Squirrels are very persistent, they will eat almost anything if they are hungry enough. I am having a problem with them also. I put out bird food and they eat that too. When I see them going towards the bird feeder in the tree next to my french doors, I bang on the door to run them away. They are so smart, now they climb unto the lawn chair to peep into the door to see if I am there before they attempt to get to the feeder. They nip the blooms off my tulips, they don't eat them they just drop them. They also eat the canvas on my swing. I put out moth balls around my tulips and that helped. How can I squirrel proof a bird feeder?

I have had a metal feeder for about 7 years that has saved my sanity concerning squirrels. It's a metal feeder that has a top that you lift up to fill it. On the front is a bar where the birds sit to eat. When a squirrel comes to the feeder, the bar drops down and the seed is inaccessible to the squirrel. I've had MANY squirrels fall off this feeder! They just don't get it, that they are too heavy. I recently bought one for my mother at Tractor Supply, I know you can find one on line. Just google ';squirrel proof feeder';, and you will find some. Good luck. How can I squirrel proof a bird feeder?
    Simple.

Put SAFFLOWER seed in the feeder. Squirrels do NOT eat safflower seed, but birds love it.

I buy mine at Walmart. How can I squirrel proof a bird feeder?
We have a lot of very sly squirrels in our area as well and we've found that if we hang the bird feeder from wire they can't get to it. Just make sure that the wire is at least 12 - 18 inches long and this should solve your problem.
try getting one of those bird feeders with a little cage-like thing around it if you know what i mean. Birds can get in, squirrels can't
never put them in or by trees and make sure to put it up very high on a pole that squirrels or any other animal can can climb
    stand and guard it :)
    go to gardenpests.com and search.
It depends on what type of feeder you use, and where it is located. For hanging feeders domes work well, positioned above the feeder by a foot or so.

If it does not work well immediately, put a knot in the line that holds the feeder and put a washer on there before sliding the dome onto it. That allows the dome to tip a little more under a squirrel's weight, and they slide off.

My girlfriend had a problem with them climbing the post-mounted feeders. It did not matter about one, because the feeder itself had a dome on top, plus it has an automatic battery-operated device that spins the bottom and throws the squirrels off. (triggered by the weight of the squirrel)

They would get up there and jump over to the other one which held suet. We tried several things to block them from jumping, but all failed.

Finally, I found a solution that worked! I bought galvanized vent pipe, wrapped it around the uprights, and clipped the pre-formed sides together to make a tube. They cannot climb it even with a running start, and they cannot leap five feet straight up to get over it.

Now they just eat whatever the birds drop onto the ground.

They still take a run at the tubes, but cannot get even half way up.
if it's a hanging feeder, there is a plastic dome that you put on the srting above the feeder, when squirrels get on the dome, it tilts and they fall off. If it's a pole feeder, there is another type of plastic dome, but this time it's inerted. a squirrel can't get around it.
I really don't think you can. Squirrels are *very* intelligent.
Try putting the bird feeder on a high, metal pole away from trees or the roof. Squirrels are very inventive.
Simple answer: You can't. Suggest you increase your bird-feeding budget to include extra food for the squirrels.

How do you squirrel proof bird feeders?

I love watching the birds and filling their feeders, but I don't enjoy watching the squirrels emptying them out. I have bought the ';squirrel'; proof feeders that are on springs and close the feeding holes from their weight, and I have bought the plastic bowl looking contraptions , and they don't work... Any new ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank youHow do you squirrel proof bird feeders?
I have fought this battle for a long time and also had problems with large numbers of doves, as well as squirrels, cleaning out my feeders in no time flat. I have found you have to buy a special squirrel-proof feeder. I have tried many and finally found two that are truly dove-proof and squirrel-proof:

    Brome Squirrel-Buster Plus (the best)

Droll Yankees Yankee Whipper (this one is squirrel-proof only if mounted at least 16'; from the support, or from any wall or tree, so that the squirrels cannot reach it and pull it towards their hungry little selves.)

Another good feeder that keeps out both squirrels and large birds is the Duncraft Selective Bird Feeder, but this one is a caged feeder, so cardinals cannot use it. I have one of these that I'm using also, and it's wonderful for smaller birds. Woodpeckers can also use it by clinging, as can grosbeaks and other desirable birds, but not cardinals.

The first two I listed, the Yankee Flipper and the Brome Squirrel Buster, are weight-sensitive. The Brome can even be adjusted so that large birds like doves cannot eat from it!!! I'm SO happy with mine. If you get the Brome, you need to be sure to get the cardinal ring that goes with it so that they can eat.

This week on my feeders, I have had red breasted grosbeaks, indigo buntings, downy woodpeckers, red headed woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, red-bellied woodpeckers, chicadees, titmice, goldfinches, house finches, blue jays, white breasted nuthatches, brownheaded nuthatches, but NO squirrels and NO doves!

For best prices, try bestnest.com and cooperseeds.com. Bestnest has a useful search engine that allows you to select what you do and don't want to feed.

I am passionate about this subject and have also spent way too much money in my quest for the right feeders. My feeders are so squirrel- and dove-proof that I am using shelled sunflower seed so that there is no messy waste. (Cooperseed.com has a good bulk price.) I have two Yankee Flippers, one Duncraft Selective, and one Brome Squirrel Buster with the cardinal ring, so I hope you can benefit from my experience and enjoy your birds!!!

P.S. I DO order bulk cracked corn from Cooper Seeds that I put on the ground in large quantities as a consolation for the squirrels and doves; towhees, white-throated sparrows, and juncos like it, too!How do you squirrel proof bird feeders?
It is important to know how the feeder is mounted and if the squirrels are climbing up a post or jumping from above. If they are not climbing a post, about the only thing you can do is move the feeder. If the feeder is mounted on a post away from overhead access, you can cover about 36 inches of the post with aluminum or any metal that the squirrel cannot get its claws into to climb. Make sure the metal is high enough up that the squirrel cannot jump higher and get a hold above it.
I've heard that putting chili pepper flakes will help keep them away from the feed. A friend of mine had her husband make a steel box that was probably 20'; deep, put that upside down on top of the pole, and then secure the feeder to the top. They can climb the pole but then can't get around the box. for this to work though, your feeder has to be away from the trees, since they can jump onto it.
A piece of PVC pipe slipped over the pole on freestanding feeders works well. It is slick and they cannot climb it. Needs to be 4 or 5 feet high.

In my yard, a lot of safflower seed is provided, to the great satisfaction of cardinals, chickadees, titmice, and other species that winter in the area but to less favorable reviews from the local squirrel population. Niger thistle is a food of choice for the local goldfinches and others of their kind, while the squirrels disdain it completely. Suet cakes left out for the nuthatches and woodpeckers are rarely molested by my squirrels, although what the crows do to these is another matter. On the large platform that is especially intended for mourning doves and house finches, a mixture of white millet seed and others is served, which seems to raise little interest from the squirrels in the neighborhood. How can I squirrel-proof my existing bird feeders?
Duct tape loops on the windows around the feeder, they hate that, ha! ;-)
For starters, get another type of feeder! Try one that hangs on a wire from a hook. Also, put nails sticking out wherever the suckers can land. Birds will be able to perch but the squirrell will get lanced basically. If you make it too hard for them they will leave them alone!
If it's on a pole, use barbwire... If it's in a tree, use barbwire...
i shoot squirls everyday. so just go get a hunting permit or what ever, and a little 22 and you can have free dinner everyday!
Somehow you need to get an Owl or a Hawk in your area, other then that, The squirrel will figure out anything you throw at them. They are very, very smart. I even tried Mega Hot Hot sauce like 1,000,000 scoville units and they loved it, so I don't know, but I will watch to see what others say.
Hang the bird feeder close to the ground.

The neighborhood cats will then be able to keep the squirrels away.
Stick some dumby cats or crow birds next to feeders, cut outs or ornaments.

How can I make my bird feeder squirrel proof?

Anyone who has bird feeders knows how frustrating it is to have squirrels destroying them. I live in an area that I call “squirrelville” because there’s so many squirrels running around. There’s a lot of trees in my neighborhood which is good for attracting birds but I can stop the squirrels from attacking my bird feeders! How can I make my bird feeder squirrel proof?
This seems to be a popular question, especially around Springtime!

The location of your bird feeder is very important. Make sure your bird feeder is well made-It’s all about quality. The best place for a bird feeder is out in the open, at least ten feet from any tree branch, deck or any other squirrel launching object. Make sure your bird feeder is hung in a safe place.

    They make anti-squirrel bird feeders...
Hey, if you can figure that one out, you'll make millions!!!
There are thousands of products on the market for this. GO to your local home depot
Whether your feeder is on a pole or suspended by rope lather it down with WD 40,cooking oil or lard , you can also place Cheyenne pepper and chili powder in the seed , it does not bother the birds but squirrels hate it.
I agree with the first answer. The fact is, it is nearly impossible to find a bird feeder that a squirrel can not find a way to get into. I watched a Discovery Channel TV show about it one time acutally (there was nothing else on), and squirrels are just so darn smart they figure it out no matter what you do. So, a solution. My aunt lives in Minneapolis, MN. She loves bird watching and haves several bird feeders, and squirrels get into each one of them. So, she decided, if can't beat them, feed them. They are going to be eating the food anyway! So, she has a couple of squirrel feeders now, and that gets them to back off the bird feeders so the birds can have more food. So, that would be my advice. Maybe just get a squirrel feeder so they don't attack your bird feeders as much. Good Luck!

Do squirrel proof birdfeeders really work, and what type is best?

I've tried the kind with the perch that drops down when squirrels put their weight on it, but it didn't hold up over the winter, the spring mechanism spronged :-(. p.s. I feed the buggers on their own tray, but NO, they are selfish and want it ALL!!!)Do squirrel proof birdfeeders really work, and what type is best?
The best, and my only way, was to place an umbrella type

product (this can be purchase in most any feed store)

on the pole before it reaches the feeder. Impossible to get around it)

    That way the extra feed falls to the ground (for other birds %26amp;

squirrels) and the animal definetly cannot get around the

umbrella. . . I use a heavy plastic purchased type.

quite inexpensive, durable and IT WORKS!

good luckDo squirrel proof birdfeeders really work, and what type is best?
Just buy shepherd hooks to hang the feeders on and don't place the feeders near trees or houses where the squirels can just jump onto the feeder.
Yes, my mom uses them. I don't though because squirrels need to eat too. I guess the animals at my house share better.

put steel wool in the opening they are entering through.... if that doesn't work... tack some cage wire over opening..... or you could put spray foam insulation in the opening.

    Be Blessed!
get a pellet gun and make an afternoon in the attic. by the way they are good eating
    some strange answers here!

1st thing ya have to do is eliminate the way the squirrels are getting on the roof. cut back all tree limbs and branches to where they're at least 7 ft away from the edge of the roof, also, cut down any limbs/branchs growing over the roof, trim down tall bushes also. then you can go through the steps of sealin off the entry holes. if your as perturbed with the little fluffytailed tree rats as i am, i recommend a crosman monte carlo pump up air rifle w/ a properly sighted in non dot emitting laser site. rifle and scope should cost ya about $50.00
PUT STEEL WOOL IN THE HOLES WHEN YOU KNOW THEY'VE LEFT TO GET A NUT AND PLACE MOTH BALLS ALL AROUND YOUR ATTIC THEY DON'T LIKE THE SMELL.
I would contact an exterminator and ask them WHY they are coming into your home. I'm sure they can suggest something for you.
You may need to hire someone to come and put a screened cap on your chimney and air vents.
feed your cats(or get a cat) wherever the varmits are getting in--i guarantee squierlls will avoid cats like the plauge
You are on the right track, get rid of the squirrels. Try different baits, like corn or peanut butter. The problem is, of course, that getting rid of the current ones only makes room for the next ones. You might look at the environment around your home to see what is encouraging them to move in.

Also your local extension service might be able to assist you. That is what you are paying them for.
Use the same method people use to keep squirrels off the bird feeder. They install upside down funnel shaped metal form. No squirrels can traverse the underside of an inverted cone to reach the center cord that holds the feeder. Likewise install these inverted funnels on all your exhaust pipes on the roof and vents. I would make the funnel with radius of at least 10 inches. For the vent holes under the eaves, install metal screen. The whole idea is to make all openings on your roof and upper sides of your house armed with a down slope path for the critters. Unless they can grab the cone material, gravity will win every time and they'll fall off. Also did you know that mice can climb the vertical side of a house and get in through any small openings in your roof and vent holes.
you can't.....if they want in, they'll get in. if you close up the hole they're getting in, they'll just make another. try a wooden rabbit box. then just take them to your neighbor's and let them go.
stuff all holes with spray foam %26amp; / or steel wool.... holes the size of a silver dollar will give access!!!
